George Conway Taylor papers : letter and legal document, 1798-1802.

Two item collection consisting of a letter and legal document. The letter, dated July 28, 1798, discusses the political climate of the United States, France, and England. Topics, in the letter include: the Alien and Sedition acts, American foreign affairs, Congress, and people's reaction to the current political thought. The document was written by George C. Taylor to an unknown individual. The legal document is a power of attorney signed July 25, 1798, but not used until February 9, 1802. George C. Taylor of Richmond, Virginia, gave William Taylor of Jefferson County, Kentucky, the power to act in his stead. William was "to sell a parcel of land, containing five hundred acres, lying on the water of Bear- grass, in the state of Kentucky," for George Taylor.

William Berry Taylor was a lawyer and land speculator who migrated from Botetourt County, Virginia, to Shelby County, Kentucky, in the late eighteenth century. After migrating, Taylor continued to practice law in Virginia as well as Kentucky. Taylor was part of the influential Taylor family that included Colonel Richard Taylor, the James Taylor's, and Zachary Taylor.
